Sofa Buying Guide for Kolkata Homes (2026): How to Choose the Right Sofa

Two sofas can look identical in a photo. One sags within a year and smells of damp by the second monsoon; the other stays firm for a decade. Here’s what to measure, press and ask.

Quick answer

To buy a good sofa in Kolkata, measure your room and your entrance (door, lift, staircase), choose a solid or seasoned-wood frame with termite treatment, insist on seat foam of 32–40 kg/m³ density, and pick a breathable fabric with a 20,000+ rub count for Kolkata’s humidity. Sit on it for at least 5 minutes before buying, and get the warranty for frame, foam and fabric in writing.

01 Size

What size sofa do I need?

Measure the room and the route into the flat. The most common sofa problem in Kolkata isn’t comfort; it’s a sofa that won’t get through the door. Older buildings often have narrow staircases, tight landings and small lifts.

  1. Room

Wall length where the sofa will sit, plus total room width.

  2. Walkways

Leave 75–90 cm for people to pass, and 40–45 cm between sofa and centre table.

  3. Entry path

Main door, lift door, lift cabin and staircase width, including tight turns.

  4. Windows and switchboards

Make sure the sofa back won’t block a window sill, AC point or plug point you use daily.

02 Sofa type

Which sofa type suits my flat: 3+1+1, L‑shape, sofa‑cum‑bed or recliner?

Choose the shape for your layout first, then the look. Shown with sofas from our range.

3+1+1 or 3+2 sofa set

Best for: most 2BHK flats; single chairs can move between rooms

Watch out: takes more total floor area than it looks

See the Haven sofa set

L‑shape sectional sofa

Best for: open living-dining layouts and family TV time; seats 5–6

Watch out: the chaise side is fixed. Confirm left or right before ordering

See the Aurelia L‑shape

Sofa‑cum‑bed

Best for: small flats, study rooms and frequent overnight guests

Watch out: usually less comfortable as a sofa; test the mechanism, not just the look

See the Velora sofa cum bed

Recliner sofa

Best for: elderly parents, home theatre and long TV sessions

Watch out: needs 30–45 cm clearance; motorised recliners need a plug point

03 Frame

How do I check if a sofa frame is strong?

The frame decides how long a sofa lives. Fabric can be changed and foam can be replaced, but a weak frame means buying a new sofa.

Seasoned solid wood, termite-treated

The lift test

Watch
Lift test: on a rigid frame both front legs rise together; on a weak frame the sofa twists Rigid frame Both front legs rise Weak frame Twists or creaks

Lift one front corner about 10 cm. If the other front leg rises with it, the frame is rigid.

  • Ask what it’s made ofSeasoned solid wood, or solid wood with good engineered wood, is sound. Be cautious if a seller can’t tell you.
  • Lift testOne front corner up 10 cm: the other front leg should rise too. If it twists or creaks, walk away.
  • Wobble testPush the arms and back firmly. There should be no movement or creaking.
  • Termite and moisture treatmentAsk directly. In Kolkata and Hooghly this is not optional.

04 Foam

How do I make sure a sofa won’t sag?

Sagging seats are the most common sofa complaint, and it almost always comes down to foam quality, not thickness. For daily use, ask for seat foam of 32–40 kg/m³; HR (high-resilience) foam recovers its shape better and lasts longer.

The press test

Watch
Press test: good high-density foam bounces back instantly; low-density foam keeps a dent 32–40 kg/m³ HR foam Bounces back instantly Low-density foam Dent stays: it will sag

Push your palm hard into the seat and let go. Good foam bounces back instantly. If the dent stays for a second or two, it will sag at home.

05 Material

Which sofa material is best for Kolkata’s humid weather?

Short answer: a good-quality, tightly woven fabric is the most comfortable choice for most Kolkata homes because it breathes. Leatherette suits families who want wipe-clean surfaces and keep the AC on.

06 Comfort

How do I test sofa comfort in a showroom?

Don’t sit for ten seconds and decide. Sit the way you actually sit at home.

Side view of a sofa: seat height 40 to 45 cm from the floor, seat depth 50 to 60 cm from the front edge to the backrest Seat depth 50–60 cm Seat height 40–45 cm

5minutes

Sit for at least 5 minutes

Lean back, sit cross-legged, lie down if that’s how you watch TV.

  • Seat depth 50–60 cmWith your back against the backrest, your knees should bend comfortably at the edge. Taller families may want deeper.
  • Seat height 40–45 cmFor elderly parents, choose a firmer, slightly higher seat with sturdy arms so it’s easier to stand up.

07 Finishing

What finishing details should I check?

Five quick checks that show how carefully a sofa was made. Tap the numbers on the photo.

  1. Seams are straight and tight, with no loose threads or puckering.
  2. Patterns and stripes line up across cushions.
  3. The underside is neatly covered, not raw.
  4. Legs are screwed or bolted in, not just glued.
  5. Zipped cushion covers are a bonus for cleaning and replacement later.

08 Before paying

What should I ask before paying for a sofa?

A good showroom answers all six without hesitation. Vague answers are a warning sign.

  1. What does the warranty cover?Frame, foam, fabric and mechanism are often covered differently. Get it in writing.
  2. Is this exact fabric and colour in stock?Or is it made to order? What is the delivery time?
  3. Will it fit through my door, lift and staircase?Share your measurements; ask whether it can be delivered in parts.
  4. Are delivery and installation included?Any charge for upper floors without a lift?
  5. What is the frame material and seat foam density?Ask for the actual numbers.
  6. Who handles after-sales service? And how quickly do they respond?

09 Monsoon care

How do I protect a sofa during the monsoon?

Six habits that keep damp, odour and fungus away in Kolkata’s wettest months.

  • Mind the wallKeep it 5–8 cm away from walls, more from walls prone to seepage.
  • PlacementAvoid placing it directly under an AC vent or in strong direct sun.
  • Vacuum weeklyDust plus humidity causes odour and fungus on fabric sofas.
  • Rotate cushionsFlip and rotate seat cushions every few weeks for even wear.
  • Gentle on leatheretteWipe with a damp cloth only; harsh cleaners speed up peeling.
  • Blot, don’t rubBlot spills immediately.

10 Where to buy

Where to buy a sofa in Kolkata

Online stores offer wide choice, but you can’t do the press test, sit test or lift test on a screen, and returns of a bulky sofa are painful. For a purchase you’ll live with for ten years, sitting on it first is worth the trip.

FAQ Questions

Sofa buying FAQs

What is the best sofa material for Kolkata’s humid climate?

A good-quality, tightly woven fabric is the most comfortable year-round because it breathes. Leatherette is easier to clean but can feel sticky without AC, and cheaper grades may peel. For families with young kids, a stain-resistant fabric in a mid-tone colour is usually the best balance.

How do I know if a sofa will sag?

Ask for the seat foam density; 32–40 kg/m³ is good for daily use. Then do the press test: push hard into the seat and release. Good foam bounces back instantly.

Which sofa is best for a small flat in Kolkata?

An L-shape sofa placed against one corner, or a compact 3-seater with one single chair. Avoid bulky arms and very deep seats. Keep the sofa within about two-thirds of the wall length and leave 75–90 cm for walking.

Is an L-shape sofa better than a 3+1+1 sofa set?

An L-shape usually seats more people in less floor area and creates a cosy TV corner, so it suits open living-dining layouts. A 3+1+1 is more flexible because single chairs can be moved to other rooms. Choose based on your layout, not looks alone.

What if a sofa doesn’t fit through my door or staircase?

Measure the narrowest point on the way in, including the lift and staircase turns, and share it before ordering. Many sectional and modular sofas can be delivered in parts and assembled inside the flat.

How long does a good-quality sofa last?

With a solid frame, good-density foam and basic care, a well-made sofa should last 8–10 years or more. Foam and fabric can be refreshed later; the frame is what you’re really paying for.

Is it better to buy a sofa online or from a showroom?

Online offers more choice, but you can’t test comfort, foam or frame strength on a screen, and returning a sofa is difficult. For a long-term purchase, try it in a showroom first.

Where can I buy a sofa in Kolkata?

Modfurn Interiors has sofa showrooms at Diamond Plaza Mall in Nagerbazar (North Kolkata), Baghajatin (South Kolkata) and Alcove Triveni Mall in Serampore (Hooghly), open daily. Customers can also share room measurements on WhatsApp at +91 62920 60100 for a shortlist before visiting.
